2025 Commonwealth Child Safe Framework Statement of Compliance

The National Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (the National Commission) is committed to promoting and ensuring the highest standards of child safety and wellbeing across all aspects of its work. The National Commission recognises its legal, ethical and moral responsibilities to create child-safe environments and to protect all children and young people from abuse, harm and exploitation.

The Child Safety Statement of Compliance is in line with the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework, the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, and relevant laws and regulations across jurisdictions.

The National Commission affirms:

  • Zero tolerance for child abuse, harm or exploitation in any form
  • A culture of child-centred, trauma-informed and culturally safe practices
  • Respect for the rights of all children, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children who identify as LGBTQIA+ and children with disability
  • Listening to the voices of children and empowering them to share their experiences and perspectives

The National Commission also ensures compliance with:

  • Mandatory reporting laws in each state and territory
  • The Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) and the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth) relating to offences against children
  • Working with Children Check obligations
  • Applicable legislation across jurisdictions

The National Commission is currently developing robust, child-friendly complaint and incident management procedures that:

  • Support disclosures made by children or on their behalf
  • Ensure immediate protective action if a child is at risk
  • Facilitate culturally safe reporting to child protection authorities, where required
