Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism.
During the 16 Day of Activism, we stand united to condemn all forms of violence against women and girl. The campaign began in 1991 as a strategic effort to unite and amplify calls for the elimination of violence against women and girls. Each year, the 16 Days of Activism galvanises organizations around the world and draws the attention of governments to the urgent and critical issue of gender-based violence.
Gender based violence is not inevitable-it is preventable. Every woman and girl has the right to live free from fear, harm, and discrimination. As we recognise the courage of survivors and remember those whose lives were taken, we renew our commitment to speak out, support justice , and demand accountability. Ending violence is not the responsibility of women alone it requires the action of governments, communities and every one of us.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women especially face compounded forms of violence entrenched in displacement, systemic discrimination, and erosion of community ties. They are disproportionately affected by physical and sexual violence, trafficking and exploitation yet their stories are often ignored, marginalised or silenced.
Let us work together to build a world where every woman regardless of her background or heritage can live free from violence and oppression.
You are invited to get involved, join the conversation, help raise awareness, wear orange, attend events and spread the word.
